1. Mental health and its treatment in India
Mental
health is one of the most misunderstood and mistreated concept in India. When
we talk about life-threatening diseases some of us may not even consider mental
illness as part of the list. But in reality, it can be equally, if not more
dangerous for a person’s life as any other disease.
Mental
health typically means a person’s state of mind, the emotional and
psychological wellbeing. Negative mental health can cause disorders such as
depression, anxiety, trauma, panic attacks, which can eventually lead a person
to take life-threatening actions. With the extensively revolving and fast-paced
world that we have created for ourselves also comes the burden of surviving in
it. Things have changed so much in almost every aspect of life that to keep up
with it and overcome the obstacles has become very stressful and mentally
tiring for people. This sometimes causes emotional stress, anxiety, fear, and trauma,
which can trigger a person’s mental health and leave a severe impact.
Therefore, these disorders need immediate and special attention.
Many
factors play a role when it comes to the treatment of mental illness in India,
one of the most prominent factor is the unawareness on the issue. Many people
in India have a wrong interpretation of the term “Mental illness”, they usually
demean such a sensitive issue by calling it absurd.
A person
suffering from mental sickness may not even look sick but that does not make
their situation any less serious. As the saying goes, there is more than meets
the eye, but how many of us try to uncover the hidden horrors a person has? People
facing such issues don’t usually open up about them because of the fear of
judgement or being seen in a negative light. This prevents them from seeking
help and admitting their issues. For the people who do seek professional help
another alarming problem is the unavailability of professionals in our country.
For a population of 1.3 billion, there are just 5000 psychiatrists and less
than 2000 clinical psychologists.
We have
been ignorant of such a sensitive issue for a long time now. It’s high time we
take some measures to make the situation better and change our perception of
the matter for the better.
