61. How constitutional reforms such as CAA and Article 370 are affecting Indian economy

In the recent months after the Narendra Modi government has been elected for the second time in India, a few major constitutional reforms have taken place in the country. Most of these received less than a lukewarm welcome from the citizens as a big chunk of the population spoke up in opposition of the decision. The central government has been facing continuous backlash for their decision which seemed impulsive, and a threat to the economy of the country. The financial strain in terms of lack of private investment, fall in GDP, increase in unemployment which are often voiced by the economists have caused concerns and lack of faith towards the central government.

In this blog we will explore in depth about the impact of three recent reforms namely, CAA, NRC, and revoking Article 370 on the Indian economy.

Article 370:
The special status of the former state of Jammu & Kashmir under Article 370 was revoked in August 2019. The decision taken by the central government came as a shock to the country. Jammu & Kashmir is now a union territory.

So, how is the reform affecting the economy?
Narendra Modi in his interview on a TV Channel said, "There must be investment and job opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir. Article 35A, 370 have been standing in the way of development. No one goes there to invest. We can build IIMs, but professors are not ready to go there as their children don't get admission in schools. They can't find homes. This ends up harming the interests of J&K. Pandit Nehru's policies stand as an obstacle for J&K today. It needs to be reviewed."

The government's beliefs are often opposed by the communities, and renowned individuals who belief that the reason behind lack of investment in the former state are the controversies not the special status.

Citizenship Amendment Act:
CAA is one of the most controversial decisions taken by the Central government led by PM Narendra Modi that has led to mass protests and public outrage. The act is said to be a source of discrimination against the Muslim community.

The global broking house CLSA in a report on India’s drooping economy said that “there is nothing good” about the Citizenship Act. "The government may have been pursuing a devious strategy of deflecting public concerns about job and income prospects with its controversial ‘citizens’ legislation," the report said, adding that, "This was a gross miscalculation."

While the consequences of these constitutional reforms are still up for debate, things are not looking good in terms of the economic condition of the country. The rage and dissatisfaction within a major part of the country is taking a new turn with people actively speaking up against the central government.

It seems that the youth of the country is taking the role of the opposition for the Narendra Modi government.
