55. Immorality in Conflict Tourism

New Year is coming in a few months, a time to celebrate and to travel. So why don’t you try something new this time? What about some adventure?

‘This vacation travel to Mogadishu, Somalia. The city previously known as the ‘White pearl of the Indian Ocean’ has made news for decades. Visit their historical sites, beautiful beaches, mountain ranges, wildlife ranges, and waterfalls. Go on an adventure tour and get a once in a lifetime experience.’

Now tell me do you want to go on this adventure? The possibility that people might consider saying yes is a big concern. Mogadishu, Somalia, because of the civil war is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Thousands of people have lost their lives on the battlefield and many deaths were caused by its aftermath. Advertising tourism in a place like this, conflict or war tourism to be specific is disturbing and immoral to a great extent.

What is conflict tourism?
Conflict tourism also known as war tourism is travel to places that have had a conflict associated with it in the past such as, World War I, II, civil wars, terrorist attacks, etc. Places that have been a battlefield at some point. This came into origin through war correspondents such as Willem van de Velde who witnessed the battle between the Dutch and the English.

Some famous conflict tourism destinations:
1. Damascus, Syria- Civil war between Government forces and ISIS militant.
2. Mogadishu, Somalia- War between Government forces and Al-Shabaab.
3. Baghdad, Iraq- 2003 and 2011 wars.
4. Tripoli, Libya- Civil War started in 2014.

These places were battlefields at some points and it is advised no to travel to these cities for safety purposes. People travel there as a trend now in search of adventure, but, how far will you stretch adventure?

Advertising conflict tourism and places which have seen some really tough times causing high loss of human lives is unethical. It is almost like enjoying something inhumane in the name of adventure and fun.
