43. Not just Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse- Six R’s to save the environment

Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse- We all have studied the three R’s of waste management but with worsening climate conditions and increasing environmental issues, they are not enough. Climate change is a prominent issue posing as a threat for human survival in the long run. It needs to be addressed soon, we are already late but, better late than never.

Plastic is said to be the cause of most of the environmental issues, but in its favour, it is also one of the most valuable innovation which makes our life easier. The excessive and wrong use of plastic is a problem for the environment. The government has banned plastic, but, banning it without providing a viable substitute is of no use. This blog is not about plastic or its use, it is about the use of resources in general and the change we need to bring in our lifestyle for waste management.

Following are the six R’s for waste reduction:

Rethink: We have been ignorant of the environmental problems for so long, now it’s time to make a conscious effort. Question your actions. Ask yourself: Do I really need this? Is this harmful to the environment?

Refuse: This has more to do with the choices that we make. Are we making the decision that is good for the environment? Refuse if not necessary, if it could be avoided.

Reduce: Reduce the amount of waste produced by making wise decisions. Use recyclable or reusable products, avoid impulse buying decisions.

Reuse: Reuse as much as you can. This can increase the item’s product life and will indirectly lead to waste reduction. Don’t just buy anything, think if you can reuse the products that you have.

Recycle: This step is tricky and takes an added effort but it is very advantageous for the environmental conditions. There are certain products that can be recycled such as, paper, aluminium, glass, plastic, batteries, etc. Now having said that, we understand that it is not possible to recycle most of these things at home, but we could give these waste out to be recycled the right way.

Rebuy/ Replace: This means buying recycled products. This will extend the product life and will reduce the amount of waste produced.

These six Rs are conscious decisions that we can make for the betterment of the environmental conditions. We all know the problem, the question is how many of us are willing to do something about it?
