90. Thappad- Movie Review

In the new age where people are slowly standing up against the orthodox beliefs and practices of the society, Thappad sets another example. The movie highlights the small issues in a marriage that may seem trivial but are of great importance. It is a refreshing film creating dialogue around the age old beliefs and challenges the mere foundation of a marriage.

Thappad is a story of a married couple played by Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati. Through his direction, Anubhav Sinha has created a thought provoking masterpiece which takes a strong stand against patriarchy and violence against women. The film is an ensemble of great acting, direction, screenplay and dialogues.

For once the reality was not romanticised in a mainstream Bollywood movie. The story was projected in an honest and effortless manner, displaying the signs of a dysfunctional relationship.

The director set an example with one simple and straightforward subject; it may seem insignificant to some but is important to be highlighted. Amrita’s story did not talk about serious domestic violence. It showed the start of any type of violence. That first Thappad that the majority of the women choose to ignore.

Amrita’s reaction to Thappad is considered unnecessary and exaggerated. She files a divorce petition on the basis of one slap. According to her, her husband has no right to do that and she can’t move on from the incident. The story talks about how men feel entitled to have some physical power over their woman which acts as the foundation for domestic violence.

The film shows various women from different social stations being suppressed by the men in their life. From a housewife, a lawyer, to a house help, every woman struggles with their marriage becaus
e of their self declared entitled husbands. This might not be the case for every marriage, but is unfortunately a reality for many.

The screenplay was seamless from the start to finish. The director introduces different characters using orange popsicle as a prop and establishes a link between their lives. The story builds from there, and the end is well defined and satisfactory. It is a progressive film and a must watch to get a fresh take on feminism and equality.
