5. Hidden Gems of Indian Cinema- Part 1
I love
Bollywood! Growing up, I have always been this Bollywood junkie dancing around
on Bole Chudiya and pretending to be the Poo in my head. A classic Bollywood
drama made me the happiest. It was my refuge, my escape from this world to a
place where I could experience something so novel and unexplored. As I grew up,
cinema fascinated me even more. Not the glamour and the fame the profession has
but rather, the power you, as a filmmaker hold to influence people on such a
large scale. To make the audience see what you want and convey your message in
such an artistic way that it leaves a major impression behind.
Indian cinema is the largest cinema in the world in terms of production per year. It produces around 1800 films annually. Some of these movies work wonders on the box office but many don’t get the recognition that they deserve. Following is the list of the most underrated movies of Indian cinema that every cinema lover should watch.
Pyaasa (1957)
Sometimes
old really is gold! Pyaasa is an epic drama from the golden age of Indian cinema
starring Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman and Mala Sinha. According to the critics, Pyaasa
was way ahead of its time, it called out to the hypocrisy of the Indian society
by showcasing its darker side in the form of art. It introduces the theme of
materialism versus spiritualism in Indian cinema. Unfortunately, the movie
flopped at the box office but, it is still one of the finest movies of all
time.
Masoom (1983)
Masoom
is an Indian drama film based on the 1980 novel Man, Woman and Child by Erich
Segal. The film was the directorial debut of filmmaker Shekhar Kapur starring Naseeruddin
Shah, Shabana Azmi and Tanuja. The story shows a fresh take on the issue of
infidelity and illegitimacy in the Indian society. The movie has some of the
most memorable songs of Bollywood such as Tujhse
naraz nahi zindagi, lakdi ki kathi. It is a must watch for every cinema
lover looking for great acting, storyline, screenplay and music.
