18. Speak up to save the environment

Climate change is one of the most crucial issue in the world that has been ignored for a long time. It is a new weather pattern caused by the change in earth’s climate system which is harmful to the environment and human survival. It is a problem that needs to be acknowledged soon and we need to come up with measures to rectify the situation.

Carbon emission is a major cause of climate change and worsening environmental conditions. It causes weather problems such as extreme heat during summers, extreme cold in winter, changes in the monsoon, fluctuation in temperature on the ground, rising sea level, melting of glaciers, droughts and floods. It is not possible to rectify the damage that has already happened to the environment but not inflicting any more harm is something we could work on.

According to an article by The Hindu published on 26 March 2019, India’s per capita carbon emissions are about 40% of the global average and contribute 7% to the global carbon dioxide burden. The statistics are continuously increasing, but a collective effort may help the cause. Today, social media has a great influence on our lives, each and everybody is on social media platform voicing their opinions for the world to hear, because of this so much information is available that sometimes the important issue gets lost in the chaos. We are all speaking up on social media platforms on an issue or other, why not speak up for something that needs our attention?

Public opinions are heard all over the world and can be used in a strategic way to bring or demand change in the society. Carbon emission can be decreased by bringing changes in our behaviour and lifestyle. Following are some of the behavioural and lifestyle pattern that causes carbon emission: Electricity is made out of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas which then burn and cause high carbon emission. The more electricity we use or waste directly causes an increase in carbon dioxide emission in the environment. Most of the households own at least one vehicle in India, petrol and diesel used in these vehicles emit a large amount of carbon dioxide. This can be avoided with an increase in the use of public transport.

We all are aware of the problem but not much has been done to bring the change. This problem can be solved by using public opinions to create a desire to bring change for the better. This can further be followed by coming up with a reasonable approach and strategy through meaningful discussions and then deciding upon a proper course of action. Just creating awareness is not enough anymore, the situation demands a valid course of action to solve the problem.
