34. The Sound of Music


♫The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears♫

In 1965, America saw one of the most iconic movies of all time, a musical drama film, The Sound of Music. Starring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain Von Trapp the movie was a masterpiece directed by Robert Wise. The film is based on Maria Von Trapp’s book ‘The Story of The Trapp Family Singers’. It is a true story of the Von Trapp family, their unusual circumstances and their love for music.


 The movie is about a young Austrian postulant who was sent to the villa of a retired naval officer to be a governess for his seven children in Salzburg, Austria. Her bubbly personality, honesty and charisma is novel for the kids who have grown up with great discipline by their father. She forms a romantic relationship with Captain Von Trapp and later becomes his second wife becoming a part of the family. She teaches the kids to act their age by bringing joy, happiness and music in their life. The family transforms into The Von Trapp Family Singers. The movie ends when the Von Trapp Family leaves Austria after the Nazi Anschluss; they choose their freedom. It is said that the family later came to the United States and became a famous singing group.

Apart from the commendable acting, direction and storyline, the movie is well known for its iconic songs such as My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss, So Long, Farewell, and many more. The movie set a benchmark in the history of cinema and was universally acknowledged. In a few weeks of its release, it broke box-office records in twenty-nine countries. The movie was released twice in theatres, first in 1965 and then again in 2018. It is the third highest-grossing movie of all time.

In the end, as a tribute to the film, I would like to say,

Millennials is a term commonly used to define a certain demographic of the population. Also known as Generation Y, millennials denote a set of people based on their demographic.
