63. Tamasha Out of Your Fictional World
In 2015
Imitaz Ali gave a heavily underrated and commercially flop film, Tamasha.
Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles, Tamasha was a
Bollywood romance drama. The film did not receive a positive response at the
box office. Continuous negative reviews made it even worse for the film to
succeed.
Imtiaz
Ali is a popular movie director who gave Bollywood movies like Jab We Met, Love
Aaj Kal, Rockstar, Yeh Yawani Hai Deewani, and Highway. It is said that he
doesn’t make movies to impress the public, but rather his movies are made out
of pure love for the art of filmmaking. While Tamasha was failing on the box
office, simultaneously it started getting thumbs up from the film critics.
Tamasha
is a story of Ved and Tara, their love and struggle to overcome the harsh
reality of life. It was about their struggle in dealing with the Tamasha out of
their encounter in Corsica. The story starts in Corsica with Tara losing her
bag which had her wallet, passport, and phone. She then meets Ved who offers
her help and they dive into an unusual decision of only telling lies to each
other. During their vacation, they never tell each other anything about
themselves, not even their names. Ved being his charming, filmy and funny self,
woos Tara and they fall in love.
The story
takes a turn with Tara leaving from Corsica to go back to her home in Kolkata.
After four years, they meet again in Delhi. They try to rekindle their
relationship but Tara finds Ved different from what he was in Corsica. She
realises that Ved is not really being himself, he suppresses his real
personality to blend in with his surrounding without even realising it. This
causes a major fight and they drift apart. Without giving away the climax, I
would say the end comes as a surprise.
The movie
did not appeal to the mass audience, but it spoke volumes to a few. The movie
catered to a specific set of audience, instead of being a commercial film with
pure contemporary cinema at play. It was a masterpiece for people looking out
for great acting, story and direction. The dialogues, songs and scenes made it
more of a tear-jerking experience. It is a must-watch for people looking out
for great cinema.
