46. Barfi! A Silent Tale Speaking Volume
There
are some things with a few words but a world of meaning behind them, Barfi is
just that. It is a Hindi comedy-drama released in 2012 directed by Anurag Basu.
The movie is one of the finest work of Indian cinema.
It is
the story of Murphy “Barfi” Johnson, a deaf-mute boy and his relationships with
two women. The film projects a love triangle between Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor), Jhilmil
(Priyanka Chopra), and Shruti (Ileana D'Cruz). The movie is divided into three
parts with Barfi and his love story with Shruti coming first which ends with
Shruti marrying another man of higher social status and functionality then
Barfi. After which he meets his childhood friend Jhilmil, a mentally challenged
girl and then the movie explores a beautiful relationship between the two
characters. Their love was simple, their flaws complemented each and other.
With almost no words but emotions in abundance, the director was successfully
able to convenience the audience about the intensity of their emotional connection. By
chance one evening Barfi meets Shruti again after and this gives the movie a
new twist.

is a rollercoaster ride of drama and emotions.
Challenging
the picture-perfect standard idea of lead characters in Bollywood movies, Barfi!
has a deaf-mute boy and a mentally challenged girl as leads. Both of these
characters played beautifully by the star cast complimented the script
perfectly.
Filmed
in the natural beauty of Darjeeling, accompanied by the unique storyline,
characters, acting, and music, the movie is an experience worth having.
It is
rated four stars by Times of India, an 8.1 on 10 by IMDB, and 86% by Rotten
Tomatoes. Made in the budget of Rs 30 crores, the film grossed over 1.75 billion
worldwide. The movie is critically acclaimed and has been nominated for
multiple awards seven of which it won. Barfi! was selected as India’s official
entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 85th Academy
awards. At the 58th Filmfare Awards, it was nominated for thirteen
awards including Best Actress for Chopra, and Best Supporting Actress for
D'Cruz, and won seven including Best Film, Best Actor for Kapoor, Best Female
Debut for D'Cruz, and Best Music Director's for Pritam.
