94. Mental Health during COVID-19

The world is battling with COVID-19. These are extraordinary times that overpowered even the biggest economies. In the midst of this Pandemic when people exercise social distancing and quarantine, there have been continuous talks around mental health.

Mental health is a subject that never got the importance and attention that it deserved. Even though the times have changed, the subject is less spoken about and often neglected. People are shushed by their loved ones when they step up to speak about mental health issues.

The government has enforced lock-down on the country for a few weeks; it might get extended as well if the situation demands. At the time when the world is in haywire caused by a global pandemic, one can’t expect minds to function as they were doing before. The circumstances, consistent negative and saddening news, lack of understanding from the people, everything takes a tool on a person’s mental well-being. The problem if not acknowledged should not be ridiculed at least.

When you tell me that there are thousands of underprivileged people struggling to put food on their table, struggling to make ends meet in these dire circumstances, I understand that and my heart goes out to those people. But, when you tell me that mental stress in this pandemic is a problem for the privileged, I don’t accept that. Somebody’s problems and emotions cannot be ridiculed because others have bigger problems to deal with.

Every individual is different in their own unique sense. What affects one can be trivial for another; comparing the two is unjustified.  The current situation and the uncertainty of the future can cause stress, fear and anxiety. This can prevent people from working as they normally would, this doesn’t mean they are incompetent.

While, I understand that there might be other issues impacting more than one individual that demands proper and immediate attention, neglecting somebody’s mental well-being
is not justified. If a person requires help, just be there for them. The love and care from the close ones can make the situation better. And if for some reason you can’t understand the person, don’t belittle them because of it. Sometimes uncaring and unemotional words can cause irreversible harm.
